NIHR is receiving a Number of Relatives of some Inmates to listen to their Comments and Requests
Through its human rights position, and out of its oversight responsibility, and further to the field visit conducted short time ago to the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre (Jaw Prison), the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has received relatives of some inmates living in buildings (7) and (10) to listen to their observations and requests in preparation for following-up on them with the relevant competent authorities.
During the meeting, the inmates' families expressed their desire to expand the range of beneficiaries from the application of alternative sanctions, expand the application of the open prison system, and make adjustments to the system used for visits, in terms of increasing the period allotted for visits, ensuring more privacy during visits, and considering increasing the chances of entitlement to private visits without a glass barrier, because of their great impact on the psychological status of the inmate and his/her family, in addition to a number of other living requirements such as increasing the duration of insolation, changing the quality of foods, increasing the periods of buying from the canteen and examining its contents and prices, and following-up on medical appointments and the efficiency of health services provided.
Based upon the NIHR’s commitment to transparency and full responsibility in conveying the human rights situation inside detention places for the inmates’ families and public opinion, the NIHR notes that it has met some inmates in the aforesaid buildings, in addition to a number of other buildings, in an atmosphere of privacy, where their observations and requests have been listened to, and a detailed report is being prepared on them including the NIHR’s observations and recommendations to be submitted to the competent authority.
The NIHR affirms its keenness to preserve the rights of all, especially inmates in pretrial detention centres or the correction and rehabilitation centres, in compliance with the national legislation and the relevant international standards, the NIHR also notes that it is constantly informed of the conditions of the inmates through its continuous field visits.
